Talking heads on the Internet

My number one rule about the Internet, design and life:

"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

Why do some people think that if audio is good, video is better? They create a "video podcast" so we can watch them talk as well as listen... but they have nothing visual to convey. All the content is in the (now crappy quality) audio, so why bother with the (crappy quality) video.

Audio I can just automatically grab and throw onto my audio player and listen to it in the car, while doing laundry, while mowing the lawn, whatever. Video? I have to glue my butt to the chair to absorb your content.

Result? You're now competing for my chair time instead of my mobile time... and I have way more mobile time available for your chatter than I do chair time. You're eliminating part of your potential audience.

Use the right medium for the message. And there are too many of you using video when audio not only will do, but would actually be better. Audio isn't "poor man's video," it's a powerful medium in its own right.
