I think the latter, working a standard 8-hour day, would probably help. I'm not entirely sure I want to switch back to it, though.

I've been thinking about posting a chart with my schedule on it outside my cube, whether I'm working 8's or 9x4+4.

Also, one of the things not helping is that my cube is arranged so that people can't tell if I'm in it unless they nearly come in. I can't count the number of times that people come downstairs and say, "Mark, you're the only one here," and it never even occurs to them to check to see if I'm in my cube... they see five desks and one person and assume that person is alone because they can't see my desk.

I mostly like it that way... people don't interrupt me so much. But it does hurt the visibility thing.

A big cardboard standup of yourself, and a telepresence setup.

Of course, you'd have to get your cow orkers (hi, Mark!) to move the standup in and out of your cube on an appropriate basis.

I think going to 8x5 from 9x4+4 will help, since they don't have to remember whether you're not there because you're working from home or because that's your afternoon off.

That's the irony... I'm often more productive at home than I am at work because I miss all the office chatter and distraction.

I occasionally work from home and I have a co-worker who does it one day every week. The best way we have found to get the boss to remember that he can contact us is to almost overwhelm him with updates and e-mail on what we are doing.

I need to get back into the habit of working from home more often, I get more stuff done and if Caulay is either working from home or taking the train, it saves gas.
