Thanks! I didn't think I'd been particularly funny lately. :)

I'm still waffling on going... I'm looking at having to drive by myself, which I've done before (a concert in OKC, leaving at midnight). But I *knew* I wanted to go to the concert... I'm unsure about liking the event enough to justify going for the event alone, and not for hanging out with people. And the concert didn't require getting up at the crack of dawn. :)

Thanks on the hat... but it's my son's and doesn't fit me. :) Working on my own hat in baby alpaca, but I won't be done with the ribbing by tomorrow, let alone the whole thing. (Ack! I'd be wearing a polyester fleece hat my wife sewed for me. Can I do that at a fiber fest? Will the Wool Police be after me?)

Just go and write down your experiences of the visit. I love the way you write, makes me laugh (which didn't happen to me much lately).

Thanks, Calli. I'm surprised at how proud I am of that simple loom-knit hat... and my son loves his matching hat and scarf, and that's a plus.

The cold's not so much a problem, and the length of the trip isn't too big deal. I'm just looking at going by myself and not having anybody to hang out with. That's awkward going to a "guy" event, and going to an event dominated by women is even more awkward. That will probably be less awkward when I've got some knitting chops under my belt and I'm not a guy *and* a total newb. :)

At this point, I'm 95% planning to go.

The best thing you can do is to keep writing. I know the NaNo daily goal, but 537 words is good. For me, the beginning is the hardest b/c you don't really know who your characters are or what your plot could become. Once you get into it, the word count increases at a much faster rate.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better!

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Carl. I'm glad to hear that you're moving towards game writing again. I trust you'll keep us posted here?

And I agree with you about the sourcebook bloat -- our group switched to Pathfinder for that very reason, because it (for the moment, at least) reduced the number of books necessary for play to one. Of course, immediately everyone needed the bestiary... the cycle continues.

Yeah... things have changed. I think D&D 4E is far too complicated, but they've done some really innovative stuff with the tactical combat. And I still think the length of the Fudge rules is sufficient... D&D is geared toward spoon-feeding the player with rulebook after rulebook, and much of its design choice gives heavier weight to "creating things to sell" than to "create a good game".

In the long run, I think churning out everything they have ultimately hurts the game... in about 18 months: five monster books, two PHBs, five Power books, two *treasure* books, plus new races and monsters in two new settings. They number of races and classes available have more than doubled, especially if you count all the magazine articles. And the classes and powers that come later are, of course, better than the earlier books. Heck, they packaged new powers in the *miniature* sets that knock the socks off of the earlier powers of the same level. It makes the game about discovering the new nifty *rule thing* they've created, instead of about playing out your character's story. The stuff in the books becomes the defining thing about your character.

I'm frustrated by it, because it doesn't really support the style of play I want.... but I can find enough players for it that I turn people away. Getting people to play Fudge was a struggle.

I'm actually at the stage that I'm about ready to start writing my own game again. I'm finally getting a good idea of where I want to be in the spectrum of detailed and rigid rules to no-rules free-form, and I want to see if I can write a game that addresses that specific space... and isn't fully "traditional" but isn't all dirty-hippy "story game" either. There isn't a game that falls into the range I'm wanting that also has an open license.

In a lot of ways, I want to write a game that does today what Fudge did fifteen years ago (but hasn't done in a very long time).

Wow, things have really changed from the old days of the Raven's Mutterings, where you swore up and down that any game with a bigger page count than FUDGE couldn't possibly be worth playing!

Those tokens do look very cool, though.

Thanks, James. I can't stress enough... I thought tokens/counters wouldn't work for me, and I never would have tried them if it weren't for the free FD token set for Keep on the Shadowfell. I didn't have a good mix of cardstock stand-ups, and I knew I needed to keep track of all those different types of kobolds and goblins, so I figured I'd give it a try.

I have been really amazed by how well the tokens/counters work for me. And I do think it has a lot to do with Pozas' clean, uncluttered style... my players bring tokens with art from WotC books, and my son has the D&D Starter Set tokens with art from the books, and I really don't like those... I find it hard to identify some of them from my end of the game table.

Keep 'em coming, and thanks for providing both the massive collections and the option of bare image file.
